About The Founder

“Children, after all, are not just adults in the making. They are people whose current needs and rights and experiences must be taken seriously.” - Alfie Kohn

Dr Mahamed Hashi - Founder

Having grown up and dedicated his life to an area of London where both violence and public health are significant issues, he has dedicated his time to structuring and delivering a numerous strategies to provide the best possible platform and support for young people, and the most vulnerable in our community, to thrive.

He is someone who is acutely aware of the impact that poverty and other public health issues has on the lives of children and the most vulnerable which has been showcased from his founding of the homeless charity the Brixton Soup Kitchen. The Soup Kitchen was founded in January 2013 by Mahamed Hashi and his friend Solomon Smith, two lifelong Brixtonian who identified the essential need for such a space for homeless people and those in need.

The Soup Kitchen has become a community space for homeless people or people in desperate need. The Soup Kitchen aspires to provide food, drink and companionship in a warm and friendly environment on a weekly basis. Since that time they have served over 120,000 meals either eaten on site or distributed during food drop offs and outreach sessions.

Since founding the Brixton Soup Kitchen, He has worked with the hardest to reach communities to give everyone equal access to healthy and nutritious food while also giving them the confidence to reintegrate into wider society. It is these years of experience working in this field that have seen him primed to be able to interact with these communities without making them feel patronised or pitied.

He has sat on and currently sits on a number of professional and community boards across the country including, the Pan London Community Monitoring Network for Stop and search (former chair) and the London Probation Trust Forum. He also sit on a number of advisory groups at New Scotland Yard including Territorial Support Group Community reference group (TSG CRG) and the Trident Independent Advisory Group (Vice Chair).

He is also a representative of several other community groups. These groups include; the Black Mental Health Commission in Lambeth (of which he was a founding member and which later became black thrive), the Mayor of London’s Child Obesity Task Force and the London Muslim Community Forum which has advised the police in the wake of both the Westminster and London Bridge terror attacks, in 2017. It is these memberships allow him to keep abreast of issues as and when they develop, as well as having the appropriate access to influence changes that support the most affected communities.

In 2018 Mahamed was voted in as a local Councillor to the ward of Stockwell for Lambeth by a huge majority in Stockwell, despite only ever having voted twice. This appointment saw him as the first person of Somalian heritage to serve in the Borough.

His responsibilities as a local councillor centre around the community and whilst now in an official capacity, it sees him continue his work within the community, but with a platform to facilitate change at an elevated level. He is also the Community Organisations Champion for Lambeth Council with responsibility for building trust and confidence between the council and local grass root organisations and looking at how to coproduce relevant and prudent interventions for our young people.

He also has acquired the academic experience (despite being dyslexic) and expertise to discuss and agree strategy, however, it is due to his community work, background and exposure to challenging socioeconomic factors that he lives and works within, which allow him to provide valuable insight and the ability to implement change both at a grassroots and policy level for the communities that need it the most.
